Logo Design for Small Businesses: Myths, Costs and What to Ask

Your cousin says he can make your logo in Canva tonight. A freelancer on a marketplace wants ₹500. A studio quotes ₹40,000. Which is right? Possibly all three, depending on what you need the logo to do.
Rather than tell you what to buy, we'll go through the myths we hear most, then what a reasonable logo package contains and how to judge the work you're shown.
Myth 1: "A logo is just a pretty picture"
Reality: A logo has jobs. It has to be readable on a 40-pixel WhatsApp profile picture, print on a rubber stamp, sit on a signboard, and look fine in black and white. A design that only works in full colour on a big screen fails most of those jobs.
So ask any designer to show your concepts small, in one colour, and on a dark background. If it falls apart, it isn't finished.
Myth 2: "More concepts means a better result"
Reality: Three well-thought concepts beat ten rushed ones. Too many options usually make the decision harder and lead to a blended compromise that nobody loves. What matters more is how you brief the designer.
A good brief takes ten minutes
- What your business does and who buys from you.
- Three words you'd like people to associate with you.
- Colours you must avoid (your competitor's, for example).
- Where the logo will mostly appear: signboard, packaging, Instagram, invoices.
- Two logos you like, with a line on why.
Myth 3: "I can fix it later"
Reality: You can, but every change after you've printed boards, visiting cards and packaging costs real money. Logos are cheap to change on day one and expensive on day 300. Spend the time up front.
Myth 4: "Cheap and expensive logos are the same file"
Reality: The file may look the same on screen. The difference is in what comes with it. A ₹500 logo often arrives as a single PNG with no editable source, no licence clarity and nobody to answer questions. Ask these before paying anyone:
- Is the design original, or built from a stock template?
- Will I receive editable and print-ready formats?
- Do I own the final design completely?
- How many revisions are included?
Myth 5: "The logo is the brand"
Reality: Your logo is one piece. Colours, fonts, the way you write your tagline and how your invoice looks all shape how people remember you. That's why many small businesses are better served by a logo plus a small set of rules on how to use it.
What different budgets realistically buy
| Package | Includes | Price and time |
|---|---|---|
| Logo Basic | 1 concept, 2 revisions, PNG and JPG | ₹3,000, 2 days |
| Logo Standard | 3 concepts, unlimited revisions, all formats, social media kit | ₹5,000, 3 days |
| Logo Premium | 5 concepts, unlimited revisions, brand guidelines, business card design, letterhead | ₹10,000, 5 days |
Our opinion: Basic is okay if you already know exactly what you want, say a simple name-based mark for a side project. Most small businesses are better off with Standard, because seeing three directions teaches you what you like. Premium makes sense once you're printing stationery and want consistency across it.
How to judge the concepts you receive
The five-second test
Show it to three people for five seconds, then ask what the business does. If nobody gets close, ask whether that matters. For a brand name that already says it all, it may not.
The size test
Shrink it to the size of your Instagram profile photo. Is the text still legible?
The one-colour test
Print it in black on a plain page. Does it still look like you?
The competitor test
Search your category on Google Maps. Does your logo look like a copy of the shop nearby? Similar is a risk, since you want to be remembered.
Give feedback that helps
"Make it pop" doesn't help anyone. Say instead, "the icon feels too thin next to the name" or "I'd like a warmer colour, less corporate". Specific comments get you to a result in one round instead of five. Even with unlimited revisions, agree on one decision-maker. Logos by committee drag on.
One more practical point: keep every version you were shown, even the rejected ones. Months later you may want a colour or icon idea from concept two, and having it saved costs nothing. Also store the final files in two places, such as your email and a pen drive, because the day you need a logo for a tender or a flex banner is rarely a calm one.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a logo cost in India?
Prices range widely. Our packages are ₹3,000, ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 depending on the number of concepts and extras like brand guidelines and stationery.
What file formats should I get with my logo?
At minimum, PNG and JPG for everyday use. Ask for print-ready and editable formats too, which our Standard and Premium packages cover as "all formats".
How long does logo design take?
Between 2 and 5 days with our packages, depending on the number of concepts. Slow feedback from your side is the usual cause of delays.
Do I need a favicon?
If you have a website, yes. It's the small icon in the browser tab and bookmarks. We offer it as a ₹500 add-on.
