Local SEO and Google Business Profile: A Practical Checklist

Someone nearby types "AC repair near me" or "dentist in Indiranagar" into their phone. Three businesses show up on a map. Is yours one of them?
Local SEO is how you give yourself a fair chance. It doesn't need a big budget, but it does need accuracy and a bit of regular effort. Here's a checklist we use, plus an honest note on what no one can promise.
How local results work, briefly
Google tends to weigh three things for local searches: relevance (does your profile match what was searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known you appear, partly through reviews and mentions across the web). You can't change distance. You can work on the other two.
The checklist
1. Claim and verify the profile
Without verification you can't control what appears. Google verifies in different ways depending on the business, such as a postcard, a phone call or a video. If you already have a profile someone else created, we help sort out ownership.
2. Choose the right primary category
This is among the most influential choices. "Dental clinic" and "Dentist" are different. Pick the one that matches what customers would type, then add secondary categories that truly apply.
3. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Marketers call this NAP. Your business name, address and phone should read the same on your profile, website and listings. Don't stuff keywords into the business name; Google can suspend profiles for that, and it's not worth the risk.
4. Fill every section with real information
- Opening hours, including holiday hours.
- Service areas or the exact address, depending on how you work.
- A clear description written for people, not a keyword list.
- Services or products, with prices where sensible.
- Attributes such as wheelchair access or online appointments, if true.
5. Add genuine photos
Your storefront, inside, your team, your work. Real photos from your phone are fine if they're sharp and well lit. Avoid stock images.
6. Build reviews the honest way
Ask happy customers, ideally right after a good experience, with a short link or QR code. Reply to every review, including the bad ones, calmly and without arguing. Never buy reviews or offer a discount in exchange for a five-star one; it goes against Google's policies and customers can often tell.
7. Use posts and updates
Short updates about offers, new services or events keep the profile active. You don't need to post daily. A steady rhythm is more useful than a burst followed by silence.
What to prepare
Have these on hand: your exact business name as it appears on signage and registration, address with a landmark, phone number, hours, a list of services, and 10 to 15 clear photos. If you have a website, share the link. If your phone number or address has changed recently, tell us, because old listings across the web can confuse the picture.
Timelines and what to expect
Our Local SEO and Google Maps service is priced at ₹8,000, with delivery in 7 days. It covers Google Business Profile optimization to help you appear better in local searches. It's one fixed-scope service, not tiers. The 7 days is the time for our work on your profile. How the results change afterwards is up to Google, the competition in your area and your reviews, and it can take weeks to see a difference.
Let's be plain about this: no one can guarantee you the top spot on the map. If someone promises it for a fixed fee, be cautious.
Who it's for, and who it isn't
It suits businesses where customers come to a location or you serve a defined area: clinics, repair shops, restaurants, tutors, salons, local contractors. It isn't useful for a business that sells only online across the country with no local presence.
Mistakes that cause trouble with listings
A few errors keep coming up with local profiles. Using a virtual office or someone else's address for a location where you don't actually serve customers can lead to suspension. Creating a second profile for the same shop because the first login was lost splits your reviews. Changing your business name to include a city or service for ranking purposes is against the guidelines. And ignoring the questions and answers section lets strangers fill it with wrong information. None of these are hard to avoid once you know about them, and cleaning up afterwards is slower than getting it right the first time.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes, creating and managing a profile costs nothing. You're paying for expertise and time when you hire help.
How long until my business shows up on the map?
After verification, a profile can appear fairly soon, but ranking well takes longer and depends on competition and reviews.
Can I run a profile without a shop?
Yes, if you serve customers at their location. You can hide your address and set a service area instead.
Do reviews really matter?
Yes. They influence both Google's view of your business and whether a customer chooses you. Quality and recency matter more than a big one-off batch.
